Bateau en haute mer

Bateau en haute mer - Odilon Redon

Title: Bateau en haute mer
Artist: Odilon Redon (French, 1840-1916)
Medium: huile sur panneau parqueté
Dimensions: 16.1 x 30.3 cm

Description

A Provençal legend tells of Martha, Mary Magdalene, Lazarus, and three companions setting sail from Marseille in a rudderless, sailless boat to preach in Tarascon. In The Red Boat (c. 1900; Musée d’Orsay, Paris), Redon adhered closely to the narrative details, a departure from the greater iconographic liberty he typically allowed himself in other versions of this subject. This painting exemplifies Redon’s symbolic, rather than descriptive, interpretation of the tale. It is characterized by a rich, dramatic golden light that suffuses the composition, starkly contrasted against a turbulent turquoise sea.
