Title: Bouquet de fleurs dans un vase bleu
Artist: Odilon Redon (French, 1840-1916)
Medium: pastel on beige paper
Dimensions: 46.4 x 34.6 cm
Description
In January 1900, Odilon Redon wrote joyfully of working on his pastels, noting their immediate appeal. From this period, he increasingly turned from mystical subjects toward portraits and still lifes.
His flower pieces are defined by a balance between vision and naturalism, a ambiguity between dream and reality. Their ephemeral beauty is largely achieved through his mastery of pastel, a medium he wielded to render form with delicate lightness and luminous color. His aim was to transform nature into poetry.
Redon and his wife tended their garden at Bivres, likely the source of this wildflower bouquet. While his wife often arranged the flowers in his studio, Redon’s selection and depiction of the vase held equal pictorial importance. The vessels he painted ranged from pieces in museum collections like the Louvre to those seen at international exhibitions or from his own ceramic holdings.
