Description
Odilon Redon’s work unveils the life of a profound inner world: dreams, memories, and spectral visions. Beginning in the 1870s, Redon produced a series of charcoal drawings termed noirs, exploring imaginary beings and haunting chimeras in monochromatic splendor. After recovering from serious illness in 1895, he turned from black and white to embrace color. He stated, “colors contain a joy which relaxes me; besides they sway me towards something different and new.” In this work, Redon suspends smoky spectral figures and floating apparitions against a luminous ground. While visual delight is paramount, Redon sought more than optical effect, striving for art that transcends surface. He was committed to revealing emotion, and “in the 1890s and beyond, employing an expanded range of media and iconography, he remained faithful to his desire to create art that expresses the human soul.”
