Description

In January 1900, Redon wrote joyfully of working on his pastels, noting their immediate appeal. From this period, he shifted focus from mystical subjects toward portraits and still lifes. His flower pieces are defined by a balance between vision and naturalism, a blurring of fantasy and reality. Their ephemeral beauty is largely achieved through his mastery of pastel, a medium he wielded to render form with delicate lightness and luminous color. His aim was to transform nature into poetry. This poetic sensibility extended to his daily life: he and his wife delighted in tending their garden at Bièvres, likely the source of this wildflower bouquet. While his wife often arranged the flowers in his studio, Redon accorded equal pictorial importance to selecting and presenting the vase. These vessels might be drawn from collections like the Louvre, seen at Universal Exhibitions, or chosen from his own assemblage of ceramics.
