Description
“Fleurs dans un vase bleu” stands as a pivotal floral work from Odilon Redon’s later career, marking a profound evolution from the somber symbolism of his earlier “Noirs.” Here, vibrant reds, oranges, and blues erupt from the vase like fireworks, an effect intensified by a quasi-pointillist background. From the late 19th century, Redon turned to flowers, rendering them in a dreamlike, oneiric manner. While color and nature entered his palette, the paintings retained an enigmatic atmosphere, distinct from Naturalism or Impressionism. Redon expressed being “wrapped up in flowers, underwater dramas, among beings which might exist,” finding in painting an “infinitely enjoyable art.” These floral compositions captivate through their ambiguity: they appear alien, impossible, tethered more to imagination than to daily life. As noted by a contemporary, Redon paints “flowers as they are seen in dreams”—not flourishing under the sun, but in moonlight, nourished by unhallowed springs, emerging from nightmares and Oriental legends.
