Description
Commissioned by Vollard for the inaugural Album des Peintres-Graveurs in July 1896, this lithograph, Le Vieux Chevalier, presents a romantic and idealized vision of a steadfast knight—a solitary seeker of light and truth. Its medieval allusions and spiritual aura align with Redon’s artistic preoccupations during the 1890s. Vollard further engaged the artist for a color lithograph in the second Album and subsequently published two suites of his black-and-white lithographs: La Tentation de Saint-Antoine in 1896 and Apocalypse in 1899.
