Artist: Claude Monet (French, 1840-1926)
Medium: pastel on buff paper
Dimensions: 22.8 x 29.3 cm
Date Created: circa 1865-1875
Description
Monet’s engagement with pastel was exploratory. Most of his pastels stand as independent, complete works rather than preparatory studies, extending his pictorial repertoire. While he traveled widely, Monet the pastellist focused on a deeply personal locale: a corner of Normandy within a fifty-mile radius of the Seine estuary. This was the landscape of his youth, his artistic beginnings, and a region he remained loyal to throughout his life.
This work belongs to a group of pastels related to Ferme en Normandie. Bearing the hallmarks of a Saint-Siméon motif, its warm, chalky texture evokes Eugène Boudin’s depictions of the area and its characteristic flora. The precocious sheet depicts apple-laden trees absorbing the soft light of late summer or early autumn, consistent with Monet’s final weeks in the Honfleur area before returning to Paris in late 1864.
