Description
“It is so beautiful here, so bright, so luminous. One swims in blue air, and it is frightening.” Claude Monet wrote these words from Antibes in early 1888. During his stay, he embarked on an intensely productive campaign, completing nearly forty canvases that captured the radiant landscape of the Côte d’Azur.
La Méditerranée belongs to a distinct group from this period. Monet adopts a low vantage point, distilling the scene to its essential elements: land and sea. Short, rapid strokes of impastoed color convey the shimmering water and gentle waves. Every part of the canvas glows—vivid purple shadows cast by foliage, vibrant teal and white capturing dancing light reflections. Its boldly simplified composition makes it one of the most radical works from the Antibes series.
The golden light of the south struck Monet with revelatory force. He wrote to Renoir of “fencing and wrestling with the sun,” noting that painting there required “gold and precious stones.” Despite the region’s volatile weather, from brilliant sun to raging mistral winds, Monet painted with unwavering passion. He increasingly employed a serial approach, returning to the same motif under different conditions—a method that would define his iconic 1890s series.
In La Méditerranée, Monet transforms the fleeting light of the Mediterranean into a lasting artistic vibration.
