Description

In the final decades of his life, Monet’s water garden at Giverny became his almost exclusive subject. He reflected: “I have painted these water lilies often, shifting my viewpoint each time. The effect changes constantly—not only with the seasons, but from minute to minute. The flowers themselves are not the whole scene; they are merely the accompaniment. The essence is the mirror of water, altering at every moment with reflections of the sky, which give it light and movement.” This statement reveals his enduring pursuit of visual perception.

During this profound valedictory period, Monet produced around two hundred paintings of his lily pond, the culminating achievement of his long career. These canvases affirmed his belief in the primacy of visual experience while employing a radically novel pictorial language that remained transformative even for the new century. As France’s most celebrated living artist and a founding figure of modernism, the Nymphéas re-established his position at the forefront of the avant-garde.

The present Bassin aux nymphéas was begun in mid-1918 and completed the following year. Lily pads cluster toward the edges of the composition, while a stream of sunlight cuts through the center. Monet emphasizes the picture plane through vigorous, textured brushwork, yet suggests depth through the diminishing scale of floating blossoms. Horizontal islands of foliage contrast with vertical reflections; deep, impenetrable greens set off the lighter hues on the water’s surface. The blossoms are rendered with pronounced impasto, asserting their presence. Sunlight enters from the lower left, creating a dynamic wedge of reflected sky that energizes the composition.

These works emerged amid the shadows of war and personal trials. Monet wrote to Prime Minister Clemenceau offering two decorative panels to the state as his contribution to the victory. Thus, the painting transcends mere garden beauty, embodying an individual’s search for beauty and permanence in a turbulent era.
