Description

“Le Givre” belongs to Monet’s series of eighteen snowscapes painted in Argenteuil during the winter of 1874-1875. This group captures the ephemeral effects of winter upon the town: deep snow in sunshine, falling snow under leaden skies, light hoar-frost on frozen earth, and melting snow at sunset. Monet meticulously explored the subtle variations of winter light during this period.

Monet moved to Argenteuil in 1871, and this agreeable town on the Seine’s right bank became the setting for one of the most prolific and celebrated phases of his career. The winter of 1874-1875 was exceptionally severe, with record snowfall providing rich visual material. The present work, likely executed in late January or February, depicts a frost-covered meadow after the deep snow has receded. An open expanse is bordered by a receding thicket on the left, with the whitewashed walls and terracotta roofs of houses along the Boulevard Saint-Denis visible in the distance.

Using a restrained palette of blues and browns, Monet recorded the play of light and shadow across the snow. Shadows dominate the left side, while soft winter sunlight, suggested by delicate touches of rose and cream, illuminates the houses on the right. Monet’s legendary dedication to plein air painting in winter is evident; he once wrote of working neck-deep in snow, fearing only a change in weather. The compositions of these snowscapes show a clear debt to Japanese woodblock prints, particularly the dynamic use of winding paths and spatial recession found in the works of Hokusai and Hiroshige, highlighting a profound dialogue between Impressionism and Eastern aesthetics.
