Description

Claude Monet’s “Views of London” series, created during the final glorious phase of his career, remains captivating for its ethereal and mystical quality. “Le Parlement, soleil couchant” depicts the Houses of Parliament bathed in twilight, belonging to a group of nineteen works begun between 1900 and 1901. In this painting, the Gothic silhouette transforms into a wavering blue mirage, with luminous pink breaches in the clouds—the urban landscape dissolves into a near-abstract, fleeting vision.

To capture the Thames’ shifting atmosphere, Monet developed a distinctive working method. He would paint from a terrace at St. Thomas’ Hospital in the late afternoon, progressing multiple canvases simultaneously to contend with ephemeral weather conditions. This pursuit of transience led him toward a serial perspective. London’s elusive fog presented both a formidable challenge and a catalyst for artistic breakthrough. The bold, creamy brushstrokes dissolve into pure harmonies of color upon close viewing, foreshadowing the abstract explorations of his later “Water Lilies” series.

These works were ultimately refined over years in his Giverny studio. Monet insisted on presenting the London views as a cohesive whole, like movements of a symphony. The 1904 exhibition at Galerie Durand-Ruel confirmed his vision; critics marveled at how he had “reached the extreme limits of art.” In fin-de-siècle London, Monet found a subject worthy of his most daring ambition—using tangible pigment to capture intangible atmosphere, imprisoning evanescent sunlight on canvas.
