Description

Between 1918 and 1924, Claude Monet produced a series of twenty-four paintings centered on the Japanese footbridge spanning the water-lily pond in his garden at Giverny. A single work from this group bears a signature and the date 1919.

This series evolved in parallel with his monumental Grandes Décorations. The bridge, once a distinct architectural feature, becomes subsumed by wisteria and willow, its arch forming a lyrical counterpoint between the horizontal pondscape and cascading foliage. It serves as both a unifying motif within his cultivated paradise and a homage to japonisme, the profound Japanese influence on French art since the 1860s. Monet, an avid collector of ukiyo-e prints, once expressed his particular honor in being understood by the Japanese, whom he considered “masters who have felt and represented nature so profoundly.”

Painted against the backdrop of World War I’s end and personal loss, these works also emerged from a period of severe visual impairment. Diagnosed with cataracts in 1912, Monet painted these scenes in the fragile light of dawn or dusk, capturing mist-cooled greens or sunset-fired reds. Following risky surgeries in 1923, his perception of color was altered. Yet, with corrective lenses, he returned to these canvases, applying paint with unprecedented freedom. The surfaces seethe with thick, gestural impasto, pushing beyond representation toward raw, emotional abstraction.

These late works, with their dense facture and palpable energy, became a crucial touchstone for post-World War II artistic movements, including Abstract Expressionism and Art Informel. They embody Monet’s final, transformative struggle, where personal tribulation yielded an art of profound inwardness and mastery, a full merging with the act of creation itself.
