Description

This canvas stands as one of only four views Monet painted of Poissy, where he resided from December 1881 to April 1883. Situated on the banks of the Seine about twenty kilometers west of Paris, Poissy was a town of nearly six thousand inhabitants during Monet’s time.

At Poissy, Monet rented the Villa Saint-Louis, sharing it with his two sons and Alice Hoschedé and her six children. “Les tilleuls, Poissy” captures the view from the villa’s window, overlooking linden trees on the Cours du 14-Juillet with the houses of Old Poissy beyond. The Seine flows just to the left, outside the frame. The long shadows and golden light bathing the houses suggest a late afternoon scene. The full foliage indicates the work was likely painted in the spring of 1882.

During his year and a half in Poissy, Monet produced just three other scenes of the town, making this a rare pictorial record of a brief but significant chapter in his life. The composition serves as a quiet, luminous testament to a transitional period before his permanent move to Giverny.
