Description

In the summer of 1882, Monet stayed in Pourville with his family and Alice Hoschedé’s household, a period of openness and happiness in their relationship. Having discovered this stretch of the Normandy coast earlier that year, he returned to rent the Villa Juliette, visible at the right in this view from the path of La Cavée.

The painting vibrates with Monet’s engagement with the scene. A turquoise sea is animated by strokes of intense lapis and the accents of white sails. In the foreground, explosive brushwork captures foliage swept by the wind, while ribbons of color thread through the trees. A high horizon and plunging perspective lend drama to the descent toward the seaside village, with houses rhythmically defining the receding slope. Here, the lush greens of the land and the shifting blues of the channel coalesce into a radiant study of light and atmosphere.
