Description

Executed in 1901, Waterloo Bridge belongs to Claude Monet’s celebrated series born from his turn-of-the-century journeys to London. Residing at the newly opened Savoy Hotel, Monet contemplated the Thames stretched before him, bathed in pale winter light diffused through a dense atmosphere of mist and coal smoke. From his suite, he viewed the Houses of Parliament beyond Charing Cross Bridge to his right, and to his left, the rhythmic arches of Waterloo Bridge, framed by factory chimneys billowing smoke on the south bank. These three landmarks became the principal subjects of his ethereal, near-abstract visions, transforming the city and its fog-laden skies into timeless yet modern poetry.
